BOX FILE 10 - DEEDS RELATING TO RIDGE END/HOLLINGWORTH, ROUTING WALLS
Contents:
1. 19th November 1607 : Purchase by Thomas Sydbotham of land from Manor of Marple with the agreement of George Elliot, Robert Milner, John Heginbothom, Thomas Hibbert, Ottiwell Heginbotham and Oliver Goddard (no mention of Bradshaws) new or late in occupation of James Sydbotham for 20 years.
2. 20th May 1675 : Deed of Settlement : Thomas Sydbotham
3. 8th December 1694 : Cancelling the debt. George Heginbotham of Mellor, Yeoman, to be paid off by John Heginbothom of Marple, tanner and Jonathan Heginbothom of Marple, eldest son of John. Land recently belonging to Thomas Sidebotham, late grandfather of Jonathan Heginbothom, now in occupation of John and Jonathan Heginbothom. To pay George 44s on June 24th and February 2nd 1697. When all money paid, debt is cancelled subject to a payment to the younger children of Katherine Heginbothom to be raised and paid after the death of John Heginbotham.
4. 1713 : Indenture dated 4th November 1713 confirming the sale and transfer of a piece of land in Marple known as Rough Ridge by Henry Beely to William Booth. [Note : the endorsement writes Beeley’s name as Bayley]
5. 4th August 1756 : Thomas Bullock of Marple and Mary his wife have had a mortgage with Benjamin Bancroft of Danbank, Marple (26th July 14 GeorgeII). This is transferred to Thomas Bennett of Kinder, (25th March 1752). The Bullocks have trouble paying off interest and mortgage is again transferred, this time to David Bridge of Heaton Norris. The deed to David Bridge had missed out two dwelling houses so this had to be made right. Property is all that messuage and tenement name of the Hollins in occupation of Daniel Platt as undertenant and Lee Cote with James Laughton as undertenant with the field the meadow at the house.
6. 8/9th June 1762 : Thomas Bullock of Marple and John Bullock, eldest son of Thomas had a mortgage with David Bridge, now with him, sell the property of John Hollingworth the elder of Chisworth. Two messuages, etc. called Ridge End in Marple now in possession of Isaac Broadhurst and - - - Oliver. Higher Field and Lower Field at Hollins and Eagle Cole Croft, two Cheshire Acres.
7. 14th April 1764 : Will of John Hollingworth of Chisworth, Yeoman, to son John Hollings and Lee Cote. No mention of Diglands, Ollerset or Routing Walls.
8. 23/24th November 1787 : Two deeds, lease and release for a mortgage to John Hollingworth, Yeoman from William Fox of Edale. Two messuages and tenements Ridge End, in possession of James Mosley or his undertenants, late in possession of Isaac Broadhurst and Henry Oliver. And also several meadows or closes belonging to said messuage, Higher Field, the Lower Field at Hollins and the Legh Cote Croft, in all acres of large Cheshire measure. Also outbuildings, stables, orchards, woods, gardens, commons of pasture and turbary, watercourses, etc.
9. 9/10th February 1789 : John Heginbotham of Mellor, Yeoman takes over the payments of the mortgages. (a) Land and property called Diglands in Ollerset in parish of Glossop, four Cheshire acres in occupation of George Gee and mortgaged to Mary Shaw of Mellor for £200. (b) Land and property Ridge End Marple with Higher and Lower Fields at the Hollins and Legh Cote Croft, two Cheshire acres. In the occupation of James Fogg, John Rawlinson and Joseph Sidebotham. Mortgaged to William Fox of Edale for £100. (c) Land and property at Routing Wall and Ridge Croft in Marple unoccupied but late with Isaac Sidebotham ½ acre, close in possession of James Fogg and John Rawlinson. Mortgaged to George Worthington of Altrincham for £60. Also a small piece of land for a garden of John Hollingworth in Marple, purchased from the freeholders of Marple, 64 square yards in tenure of Joseph Sydebotham. John Heginbothom lent John Hollingworth £190 on the 7th Feb bond of obligation for £386.
10. 14th April 1791 : To Oldknow, estates of John Hollingworth in Marple and Timperley.
11. 6/7th June 1791 : Lease and release of Hollingwood Estate from John Hollingworth and his wife to John Rawlinson, price £100 i.e. SALE of land. Mortgages to Fox, £100 and Heginbotham £60 Hollinwood and fields Higher and Lower at the Hollins, totalling 1 acre, 3 rods Cheshire measure. Part of field to be divided off, but retain right to water cattle in a well or spring near another house/land belonging to John Hollingworth called Routing Wall. John Hollingworth also has the right to get stone in a close called Little Ridge belonging to Barnsfold Estate for the purpose of building a bay to the said messuage.
John Hollingworth and his wife Jane paid at the Great Session at Chester in April 1791 a levy to Samuel Oldknow in respect of 5 messuages, 2 barns, 2 stables, 4 shippons, 5 gardens, 1 orchard, 11 acres of land, 7 acres of meadow, 22 acres of pasture, 4 acres of wood, the right of pasture on common land and of turf cutting, all in Marple. In addition in Timperley a part of 3 messuages, 1 barn, 1 stable, 1 shippon, 3 gardens, 1 orchard, 4 acres of land, 4 acres of meadow, 6 acres of pasture, 2 acres of firs, 2 acres of moss, right of pasture and turf cutting. After paying the levy the land could be sold to John Rawlinson who would pay off mortgages.
12. 11th June 1791 : John Downes late of Weathercotes, Bowden Middlecale by his will 21 Jan 1739 bequeathed property Diglands at Olerset to his daughter Mary and wife of John Hollingworth of Chisworth, after her decease to go to John Hollingworth her son who must divide £86 between children, i.e. his siblings. John Hollingworth the elder died 1764 and by his will left his lands in Marple to his son John paying his daughter Mary Stopford wife of Thomas Stopford of Audenshaw, Ashton under Lyne £100 to be divided among her children when she thinks fit, interest in the meantime to her. A further £100 also goes to her payable out of Diglands. John Hollingworth the younger had mortgaged Diglands to Mary Shaw of Mellor for £200 and land in Marple to William Fox of Edale for £100, these mortgages had been conveyed to John Higinbotham of Capstone, Mellor. It was time to clear up the mortgages and Mary Stopford got her money.
13. 11th June 1791 : Copy of Thomas Stopford and wife, release for £100 and £100 under wills of father and grandfather.
14. 15th April 1797 : Purchase from Samuel Oldknow of a piece of land at Ridge End, comprising 1 acre 1 rod and 11 perches.
15. 21st March 1818 : Probate of will of John Rawlinson.
16. 24th March 1838 : Release of Hollingworth and land in Marple from the late John Rawlinson to Robert Rawlinson.
2003 / 2004 : Ridge End Farm : Plans for proposed layout on Ground and First Floors.
Undated : Handwritten research notes relating to Ridge End.
